NASA Advanced Modeling and Simulation Seminar

CRAFT Tech’s Dr. Balaji Muralidharan will be speaking at the Advanced Modeling and Simulation Seminar, hosted by the Computational Aerosciences Branch at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing facility. The talk is titled “Towards a Generalized Approach for Acoustically Adapted Synthetic Turbulence Generation at Zonal Hybrid RANS/LES Interfaces,” and will be held on Thursday, July 8th, 2021 at 12PM EDT.

An emerging trend in the CFD industry is the use of hybrid approaches that combines the efficiency of Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) for modeling attached flow regions and the accuracy of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) for handling separated unsteady flow regions. In such a paradigm, stochastic perturbations are added to the mean flow at the hybrid RANS/LES interfaces to trigger the onset of flow instabilities that transition to realistic scale resolved turbulence. Due to the artificial nature of the perturbations, the transition to a realistic turbulence occurs over a finite region in which the flow behavior is not well defined. Many of the past attempts to overcome the limitations posed by the Synthetic Turbulence Generation (STG), are either too specific to the solver or are limited to very specific situations and/or conditions. Combustion Research and Flow Technology (CRAFT Tech), in combination with NASA, is working on the development of an integrated, modular, well-validated software toolset for the generation of acoustically adapted synthetic turbulence to be used in conjunction with any zonal hybrid RANS/LES approaches.
