Topic: Large Eddy Simulation of an Optimized Highly-Compact Supersonic Inlet Featuring Internal Compression Spikes
In this study, a Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) of a highly-compact supersonic inlet with internal compression spikes is performed. The inlet geometry is from an earlier Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) based design optimization study in which pressure recovery was maximized and circumferential distortion intensity was constrained at the aerodynamic interface plane (AIP). The objective of the current work is to assess the time-dependent efficiency and distortion metrics of the inlet, and to determine whether RANS function evaluations are adequate to characterize the performance of designs in the optimization. Results show that time-averaged flow quantities from the DDES solution match reasonably well with the RANS simulation. Total pressure recovery at the AIP was found to differ by less than 2% between the time-averaged DDES and RANS solutions. Differences in distortion metrics at the AIP between the two solution methodologies were higher with a 10% difference in circumferential distortion intensity. Finally, the effect of having the internal compression spikes in the inlet geometry is investigated to understand its relevance to overall performance of the inlet.
