These figures show the turbulent flow field over a cylinder in the proximity of a flat plate. The cylinder diameter is equal to half the boundary layer height at the cylinder location.

Figure 1 the cylinder is at the edge of the boundary layer while in Figure 2 the cylinder is almost entirely inside the boundary layer. The differences in the flow field are studies to understand experimental data on the different effect of the cylinder location on the flow downstream.
