The flow field around a cavity is unsteady and highly dynamic - it is dominated by strong vortical structures, intense aeroacoustics and very high levels of turbulence. The nature of the flow field is further complicated by the strong interaction between the turbulence and aeroacoustics resulting in feedback driven resonant phenomena. At CRAFT Tech, a fundamental approach, using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) techniques is being used to study basic cavity flows. For realistic weapons bay applications, a hybrid RANS-LES methodology has been developed which combines the fidelity of LES with the cost effectiveness of RANS. In order to handle the complex geometries and moving body problems associated with store separation applications, unstructured methods have been developed in conjunction with mesh adaption and moving mesh techniques. Recent work has involved both passive and active control of cavity aeroacoustics.

Control Of Cavity Surface Loads
A high frequency actuation mechanism is used by positioning a rod spoiler in the boundary layer upstream of the cavity. The effect on the coherence of the shear layer over the cavity is shown above and the effect on dynamic loads in the cavity is shown below.
